The Gallaudet AAUP Executive Committee has approved this central message for our faculty salary campaign, which was co-written and reviewed by AAUP members.
The Gallaudet AAUP cares deeply about Gallaudet and its future. Gallaudet’s faculty ranks have been debilitated by 14 years of flat wages, reducing our uniquely-qualified, bilingual, and majority Deaf faculty to the lowest-paid faculty in Washington, DC. A report by external forensic auditor Dr. Howard Bunsis gave clear evidence that while Gallaudet administrators were falsely telling the campus that there was an ongoing financial emergency, they were doubling administrative spending. Gallaudet is in excellent financial shape and earns tuition revenue from students, has a sizable endowment, and receives a massive annual federal appropriation encompassing 75% of its revenue. Alarmingly, the audit uncovered that a large portion of Gallaudet’s budget goes to undisclosed consultants and that there are reporting irregularities to federal agencies. This reflects mismanagement and misalignment of priorities. To honor Gallaudet’s mission, vision, and The Gallaudet Promise, the Gallaudet AAUP asks the university to prioritize faculty compensation that is equitable for Washington, DC and keeps up with inflation. We ask that Gallaudet be transparent and accountable with its finances and that it direct resources away from enriching the administration and toward academics and the student experience.
